Strength Training for Less Anxiety, How Mindfulness Helps Kids, and Why Bathing Is Good for Your Health - What’s New in Wellness
This is What’s New in Wellness, where we talk about the news bites in the health and fitness world that have popped up on our radars this month. We’ve learned why Gen X and Gen Y (aka Millennials) are not as healthy as their parents and grandparents were at the same age, the optimal amount of fruit and veggies to eat per day for a long life, and why taking a bath isn’t just good for hygiene — it’s also great for your health.
Gen X and Gen Y Are Unhealthier Than Older Generations
A new study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology has revealed that Gen X and Gen Y are unhealthier than their parents’ and grandparents’ generation. What’s to blame? Researchers found that Gen X and Gen Y have higher rates of depression and anxiety, higher use of drugs and alcohol, and poorer overall physical health — the latter of which they measured with markers like BMI and blood pressure.

Eat This Optimal Amount of Fruit and Veggies for a Long Life
We’ve all heard the age-old advice that eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is key for a healthy life. In the U.S., the public message of recent years has been a fairly vague “5-a-day,” but new research published in the American Heart Association’s journal, Circulation, says the optimal amount for a longer life is two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables daily.

Mindfulness Helps Kids Concentrate Better
Researchers tested the effects of mindfulness training in school children and their findings were positive. The children who participated in an in-school mindfulness training performed significantly better doing a task that tested their sustained attention than a group of children who did not participate in the mindfulness training.

Strength Training’s Effect on Anxiety
The journal Scientific Reports has released new research that shows a promising link between strength training and a reduction in anxiety. The interesting part of this study is that the participants who practiced strength training and reported less anxiety than their control group counterparts only practiced two sessions per week to reap the benefits. Bathing for Hygiene and Health
Baths are a staple in many self-care routines, but did you know they can also be good for your physical health? Researchers discovered that those with Type 2 diabetes who are frequent bathers ( they recommend for at least 15 minutes a few times per week) showed lower blood pressure and BMI, as well as better blood sugar control levels. Add a bath to your nighttime routine, along with these other nighttime routine ideas for a night of blissful sleep.
