Commit, Don't Quit: How to Stick to a Workout Routine

When life’s commitments are piling up and the thought of starting or restarting a workout routine sends you into a panic, remember that the hardest part is making the choice to show up. Once you take the leap (armed with a bit of planning, accountability, and positivity), you’ll soon be on your way to a dedicated practice that pays you back ten-fold in energy and health.

1. CREATE A PLAN

Before you even pull out your mat, map out your workouts just like you’d schedule a meeting or brunch with friends. Use the planner or app that you already use to schedule appointments so you have all of your commitments in one place. Don’t forget to also set an alert on your phone to remind you. It’s harder to skip a workout if you give yourself plenty of opportunities to be mindful of your goals from the get-go.

2. FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER

There are many benefits to working out with a friend, but sometimes it’s not possible, especially when you’re only able to work out at odd times of the day or you travel frequently for work. An easier option is to find an accountability partner, someone you respect who either is at the level you’re trying to get to or has your best interests at heart and will hold you accountable in reaching your goals.

Want a remote workout buddy? There’s an active community of Alo Moves members who are ready to cheer you on. Try joining a month-long challenge series with a friend, and track your own progress by logging your workouts each time you break a sweat.

3. START SLOWLY

The key to not burning out is to start slowly. To create a consistent routine, make sure you start small, set realistic goals, and build in recovery days. Incorporating rest days is just as important as scheduling your workout or yoga practice. Allowing yourself time to recover and heal will help you return to your routine even stronger.

With Alo Moves, it’s easy to plan your workouts. You can select classes that align with your current fitness level, time availability, and desired intensity and style. If you’ve practiced yoga before but are a bit out of the game, try our Renew series with Honza Lafond. Short on time? Go for a Quick HIIT Core class with Koya Webb and be done in under 15 minutes. Just getting started? Try our Beginner Power Vinyasa series with Briohny Smyth. There truly is something for everyone.

4. MIX IT UP

Did you know that we offer more than just yoga? Our HIIT classes will help sculpt your body while getting heart-pumping cardio in, while our mindfulness classes cover everything from nutrition to meditation to personal growth. You can also create your own curated class playlists made with every mood in mind. Switching up your classes keeps your routine fresh and fun, and will keep you excited to come back for more.
