How to Create a Magical Meditation Space in Your Home

If you’ve got an Instagram folder or Pinterest board dedicated to high-vibe meditation lofts and plant-filled bohemian spaces — this guide is for you. While you can meditate anywhere, it helps to have a relaxing and inviting space at home that encourages you to spend more time on the mat. Check out these tips to create a peaceful meditation space from Alo Moves instructor Caley Alyssa.

1. Find a special space that inspires you to practice.

You could convert your home yoga space into a meditation station, or create a separate sanctuary for your breathwork and meditation practice. If you don’t have room to designate as a special space, that’s OK! Work with what you’ve got. As Caley says, “Maybe it’s a beautiful piece of art that you love, or a cushion at the foot of your bed, or a crystal that holds good energy...but it’s important to have some sort of space that inspires you to practice.”

2. Remove any distractions.

Caley suggests choosing a space that’s not in a high-traffic area. Having a calm and quiet space will give you the breathing room (no pun intended) that you need. It also helps to remove distracting electronics, such as iPads, TVs, laptops, and phones, unless you’re using them for guided meditation or music.

3. Clean your space and infuse it with energy.

Breath plays such a vital part in meditation, so you want to make sure what you’re breathing is pure and dust-free. Make it a habit to clean and detoxify your space regularly and remove visual clutter to help you focus. Beyond cleanliness and visual distractions, consider the energy of your space as well. Here are a few ways to give your meditation station a high-vibe energy:

  • Light it up. Select a space near a window to bring in natural light. If you’re away from a window, consider string lights, candles, or a lamp that emits a soft, golden glow.

  • Go green. Adding air-purifying plants does double-duty as an air filter and as a beautiful design element! Bringing nature indoors will help add to your zen space.

  • Mix up your textiles. Add soft and cozy props like blankets, bolsters, and cushions. Layer up with some cozy rugs. Surround yourself with what inspires you, whether it’s your favorite art print, a sculpture, photographs, books, or pottery.

  • Make good scents. Crack a window for those free earth smells, or use a diffuser or clean-burning candle to bring a pleasing scent to your space.

  • Get high-tech. Consider adding a bluetooth speaker for days when you want to practice a meditation class, listen to soothing meditation music, or add in some nature sounds. Caley turns to music as a way to add calm vibes to her own space: “I like to keep my mantras by White Sun playing on low all day/night long in this space. Their mantras and music create such an elevated energy in my home. I often have friends and visitors comment on how good my space feels.”

4. Go practice there!

What really makes a meditation space? A person who meditates there! Whether it’s your bed, a cozy chair in your living room, or your own dedicated meditation area, the most important thing you can do to create a meditation space is to actually practice meditation.
