What Inspired Our Instructors To Teach

When we think back to who has shaped our lives, it’s likely a teacher or two will make the list. Aside from imparting their knowledge of their subject matter to us, they guide us to reach our full potential, even when we can’t see it for ourselves. It’s Teacher Appreciation Week and we couldn’t let the week close without paying tribute to our Alo Moves instructors. We asked a few of them about what inspired them to start teaching yoga, fitness, or meditation, and these are their responses.

What inspired Roxie Jones
to teach fitness

“I was at a 9-5 fashion job before I shifted industries and I felt like what I was doing for a living wasn't contributing to society or helping anyone be their best self. I had a bit of a competitive edge in group fitness classes as a participant to be the best in the room (silly, I know), and it made me feel like I could be the example if I were the instructor. So I quit my job and fell in love with teaching even though I had never done it before. I enjoy the technicality of it, curating an experience, and the idea that you could be a better version of yourself with each training session, whether it's mindset or performance.”

What inspired Kirat Randhawa
to teach meditation

“I enjoy absorbing complex material and making it accessible for the larger community. I love the process of transmutation and the way larger ideas are translated into concrete action, and I think becoming a teacher has allowed me to support others in this way. By doing this, I realize that I'm able to help make others' lives a little bit easier. That's all I can ask for. I also have a natural affinity for holding space and witnessing others in all their beauty, so it truly is a blessing to be on this path.”

What inspired Caley Alyssa
to teach yoga

“Yoga sort of found me. I never planned on becoming a teacher. I joined my first teacher training to develop my personal practice further and then teaching just sort of happened. I started sharing what I was doing with friends and colleagues and they would request private lessons. It just snowballed from there!”

What inspired Emily Sferra
to teach barre

“I think for me it was 1) my love of movement and 2) the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's day, and if I'm lucky, life. I love to see people navigate their own trajectories, to achieve things big and small. Celebrating wins and supporting through the challenging seasons is something I feel invested in; I want to see those around me thrive. Teaching feels like a total gift for those reasons; getting to be in your corner, every step of the way.”

What inspired Jackie Stewart
to teach meditation

Alo Moves instructor Jackie Stewart

“My plan was not to become a teacher but to be a devoted student, and along the path, it felt important to share with others the lessons I had learned that helped me. I have been blessed to have incredible teachers, and I can only hope that a glimmer of their light shines through me.”
