Each new year brings new trends on the wellness front, and 2019 was the year of dairy-free milk alternatives and CBD. This next year, we’ll see a rise in several trends that focus on meditation and self-care in many forms: retreats, prioritizing mental health, and treating the body holistically to achieve optimal health. Here are the wellness trends to watch out for in 2020.

Wellness On The Go

From apps that teach breathing techniques and mindfulness, to nutritious meal prep and planning, to the option to stream yoga and fitness classes, taking health and wellness on the go will continue surging in 2020, and there seems to be something for everyone. The appeal of a wellness app is that you can take it with you wherever you go, which is especially convenient if you live in a more rural area with fewer gym options or you travel frequently and don’t want to waste money on a gym membership you will barely use.

Sound Baths

For the uninitiated, a sound bath is a type of class that provokes a deep meditative state through the use of ambient noise. These sounds — made by the instructor using an assortment of crystal singing bowls, chimes, bells, gongs, or cymbals — give off various vibrations that resonate deeply in the body, resulting in a meditative and restorative state that will leave you feeling relaxed, recharged, and at peace. Many people struggle to turn off their thoughts while meditating, but a sound bath helps to block out distractions by giving your mind something to focus on. If you want to try a sound bath for yourself, check out the Chakra Sound Bath series or the New Moon Sound Bath class on Alo Moves.

Wellness Retreats

Though retreats aren’t a new concept, more people continue to embrace the idea of an escape that focuses purely on wellness versus a traditional vacation. With an ever-increasing selection of secluded yoga retreats and hotel health resorts with every amenity imaginable, there’s a getaway for every type and taste.

Holistic Wellness

In 2020, the push for holistic health will continue as people learn that proper nutrition and exercise aren’t the only pillars of wellness. People will embrace all eight pillars — physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual, occupational, financial, and environmental — in their quest for health and happiness, with the understanding that our health is affected by all areas of our lives and we should seek balance and contentment in each of them.

Self-care

Shameless self-care lives on. Gone are the days where we felt guilty indulging ourselves. In a post-#SelfCareSunday world, taking the time to care for ourselves is not only encouraged — it’s expected. Being such a personal thing, self-care can take on many forms. For some, it’s a bubble bath and a good book to unwind after a long day. For others, it’s an intense spin class or a hike in the great outdoors. However it’s practiced, one thing is for sure: it’s not going anywhere in 2020.

Gut Health

With all the talk of probiotics, prebiotics, and the fermented foods rich with them (such as kefir and kombucha), we are no strangers to gut health. In 2020, gut health will continue to make waves as more and more studies are done to illustrate the consequences of an unhealthy microbiome. This article on gut health by Time Magazine said, “Studies in both animals and humans have linked some bacteria to lower immune function; others to greater risk of asthma and allergies; and still others to chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, multiple sclerosis and some cancers.” Time to stock up on fruits and veggies!

Sleep Tracking

Wearable devices are the norm now, with most including sleep tracking technology that compiles data on everything from sleep quality to duration to help you improve your sleep hygiene and get the most restful shut eye. We predict an increase in this area in the new year as the technology improves and becomes more accurate.
